Jazz for the City: The Afro Cuban Jazz Project

Saturday, June 1, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.
Free Admission ~ Voluntary offering

As has become our tradition, we wind up the Friends of Music season with a program of comfortable jazz for an early summer’s evening. One of the most versatile contemporary Cuban bands in Los Angeles, AC (Afro-Cuban) Jazz Project fuses jazz with rumba, danzon, timba, cha cha cha, and other afro-cuban genres.

Formerly led by the group’s creator, the late great Cuban percussionist Juan “Long John” Oliva, the AC Jazz Project has made major strides in the past 10 years. Since Long John’s passing in 2004, the newly reincarnated group has performed, engaged, interacted, and connected with audiences nationwide. Its members have toured, performed and recorded with some of the greatest bandleaders from Cuba and the United States, including Celia Cruz, Hernan Lopez Nussa, Grupo Afrocuba, Manolin, and more. The group was radio 88.1 FM KJZZ’s Latin Jazz Artists of 2012.

Their music is lively, energetic, progressive and uplifting. What a great way to start your summer!
