68th Annual Candlelight and Carols Just Around the Corner

Pasadena Presbyterian Church's Friends of Music Concert Series continues next with the 68th Annual Candlelight and Carols program on December 8. This "Pasadena tradition for the whole family" features many of PPC's resident ensembles, including Kirk Choir, Trinity Choir, the Pasadena Singers, Rainbow Choir, Carol Choir, and the Van Etten Handbell Choir. This year the singers will be joined by a harpist and a brass ensemble. The evening is crowned with a festive cookies and wassail reception.

"Even when we include serious music, Candlelight and Carols is a very fun program," says Timothy Howard, the church's Director of Music. "That's because we get to set the stage for the Christmas season using both sacred and secular repertoire that isn't tied to a worship service. It's kind of a pastiche program that just moves from one ensemble to another, stitched together with audience carol singing. We don't try to tell any particular narrative from beginning to end, except that it's enjoyable to sing Christmas music together."

This year's repertoire includes "The Seven Joys of Christmas" by American composer Kirke Mechem. Mechem's extensive prolific output of choral works has garnered him the title of "dean of American choral composers." In "The Seven Joys" Mechem sets a selection of Christmas carols from England, France, Germany, Japan and Spain for choir and harp, creating an array of impressive effects. The finale is a quodlibet of familiar Christmas tunes, all piled fantastically on top of one another in a wonderfully witty shout of joy.
